OCT: Optical Coherence Tomography System
Optovue’s RTVue is at the cutting edge of technology and has features that enable us to discover even subtle losses in your optic nerve and retina and to follow these losses over time. This information helps with early detection of eye diseases and assists us to monitor the disease’s progression to determine the best preventive action plan.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is considered to be the “silent thief of sight.” There are no symptoms until the end stages of glaucoma in most variations of the disease. Therefore, it is critical for all patients to have routine eye examinations with special attention to rule out eye diseases such as glaucoma. Our OCT technology will allow us to look at the optic nerve in cross section while allowing it’s powerful software to determine change over time.
AMD
Loss of vision with aging is one of the most feared afflictions. For numerous reasons, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is becoming a major problem in health care. In most cases, total loss of vision is very unlikely, especially if the signs of macular degeneration are detected early. OCT technology allows us to look at the macula in cross section to help us in determining not only determining the extent of AMD but also differentiate between the dry and wet forms of the disease.
Diabetes
The early signs of diabetic retinopathy Diabetes are often discovered on a routine eye examination. These early signs are usually changes in the blood vessels of the retina. These vessels then leak causing retinal swelling and bleeding within the eye. This causes loss of vision. This swelling is very difficult to see, but with our OCT digital imaging system, the swelling and bleeding can be located and proper treatment can be prescribed.
Optical Coherence Tomography
It is important to realize that with this new OCT technology, your doctor is able to diagnose glaucoma, ARMD and diabetic retinopathy earlier and help you maintain good usable vision throughout your life with the use of pharmaceutical agents, laser and surgery.
Likewise, as with any other disease process, it is your responsibility to stop smoking, eat a healthy diet, maintain a desirable weight and exercise on a routine basis. If you have a family history of glaucoma make sure your family is checked as well. Also, always comply with both your therapy and follow-up visits.

Please be advised of some of the changes we have implemented to keep you safe while you visit us during this COVID-19 pandemic.
Safety is priority here at Orangeville Optometric Centre. Here are some of the measures we have included:
• All patients will be fully screened for symptoms / travel history, contact history etc.
• A telephone interview will be conducted the day before your visit to minimize the amount of time spent in the office.
• Separate exits and entrances to ensure no cross contamination.
• Staff will be wearing full Personal Protective Equipment.
• Patients will be required to wear a face mask at all times.
• Increased deep cleaning and sanitizing all surfaces after every patient interaction.
• Physical distancing observed.
• Reduced patient volumes to enhance patient safety.
• Patients are requested to wait in their car and enter only when instructed by our support staff.
• Requesting patients enter the building alone and have their driver or companion wait in their car. Exceptions will be made for those who need assistance.
• All doctors and staff health status will be monitored on a daily basis.
This COVID-19 situation presents an enormous challenge to us all. Working together is the best way to weather this crisis.
